Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Wireless Communication Technology Comparison

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules eliminate wired connection restrictions and greatly facilitate daily intelligent applications. Both wireless technologies are widely embedded in consumer electronics, while product developers need to select appropriate solutions based on practical usage scenarios.

Common Application Standards

Both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi comply with universal wireless communication specifications and share the 2.4 GHz ISM public frequency band. Bluetooth applies FHSS frequency hopping technology with a hopping rate of 1600 times per second. It divides the 83.5 MHz spectrum into 79 independent channels, occupying only 1 MHz bandwidth for single transmission. Wi-Fi follows the IEEE 802.11 protocol suite, with mainstream products working in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, and partial high-spec devices supporting 5 GHz frequency band operation.

Transmission Speed

Wi-Fi presents obvious advantages in data transmission rate. The theoretical bandwidth of 802.11n reaches 600 Mbps, and the mainstream commercial specification is 300 Mbps; the 802.11ac standard supports a peak rate up to 500 Mbit/s, and the next-generation 802.11ad technology will scale to Gbit/s level for long-range transmission within 1 kilometer. By contrast, Bluetooth 4.0 has a theoretical peak rate of 25 Mbps, with a stable transmission rate of 1 Mbps for ultra-short data packets, suitable for low-volume data interaction.

Bluetooth 4.0 delivers an effective transmission distance of 50 meters and a maximum coverage of 100 meters. In open environments, 802.11n Wi-Fi routers can achieve a signal coverage of 300 meters. Overall, Wi-Fi outperforms Bluetooth in long-distance wireless transmission.

Power Consumption Performance

Bluetooth 4.0 is optimized for low-power design, adopting only 3 broadcast channels and shortening the radio frequency activation time from 22.5 ms to 0.6~1.2 ms. Its current consumption is about 20~30 mA in standby startup, 70 mA during connection establishment, and 110~130 mA during large data transmission.
Wi-Fi supports WMM power-saving protocols to extend equipment battery life by 15% to 40%, while limited by high radio frequency power consumption. The regulated transmission power of domestic Wi-Fi equipment is 50 mW. In low-power scenarios, Bluetooth maintains irreplaceable competitive strengths.
