1. Overview of Rogers RO4003C PCB

Rogers RO4003C PCBs, manufactured by Rogers, are highly mature products with stable dielectric constant (DK) performance. The PCB manufacturing process parameters of the dielectric constant are 3.48 ± 0.05 and 3.38 ± 0.05 respectively, while the corresponding design values are 3.66 and 3.55. It should be noted that the dielectric constant of the material varies with frequency; therefore, design and simulation work must be carried out according to the actual application frequency to ensure the optimal performance of the PCB in specific scenarios.





2. ETC System and RSU Technical Requirements

At present, the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system is being vigorously promoted and implemented in China. The ETC system mainly consists of Road-Side Units (RSU) and On-Board Units (OBU). RSUs are generally installed near the toll gates of expressways, with the core function of locating and detecting OBU equipment to realize non-stop toll collection.
To improve the positioning accuracy of RSUs for OBUs, the new generation of RSUs adopts phased array radar positioning technology. The RF transceiver module of RSUs is designed as a phased array antenna, which puts high requirements on the loss factor, dielectric constant, and thickness consistency of PCB materials. 3. Rogers PCB Material Solutions for RSU Phased Array Antennas

The two material solutions provided by Rogers for RSU phased array antennas are both based on woven glass cloth-reinforced hydrocarbon resin/ceramic filler systems, each with its own characteristics to adapt to different application requirements:
  • Cost-Effective Solution: RO4350B Laminate: This laminate adopts a woven glass cloth-reinforced hydrocarbon resin/ceramic filler system, whose electrical performance is close to that of PTFE materials, while its processability is similar to that of FR-4 materials. It achieves a good balance between performance and cost, making it suitable for large-scale application scenarios.
  • Low-Loss Solution: RO4003C Laminate: Same as RO4350B, it also adopts a woven glass cloth-reinforced hydrocarbon resin/ceramic filler system. However, due to the non-brominated nature of the material, it has not obtained UL 94V-0 certification. It has more excellent low-loss performance, which is suitable for high-demand scenarios.

4. Performance Comparison and Application Selection

From the perspective of the electrical performance parameters of RO4350B and RO4003C laminates, RO4003C is superior to RO4350B in terms of loss factor and dielectric constant temperature coefficient. Due to the lack of UL certification, RO4003C is more suitable for the design of RSU antennas with high requirements for signal loss, where performance is prioritized over fire rating requirements.
In contrast, RO4350B has balanced overall performance, with stable dielectric constant, good processability, and compliance with relevant safety standards. It is suitable for the design of conventional RSU phased array antennas, which can meet the basic performance requirements of RSUs while ensuring cost-effectiveness.

5. Summary

In summary, Rogers RO4350B and RO4003C laminates have the advantages of low loss, high dielectric constant stability, and strict batch consistency control. These characteristics enable the two materials to fully meet the antenna design requirements of RSU roadside units in different application scenarios, providing reliable material support for the stable and efficient operation of the ETC system.
