  • Data Sheet

Solder mask serves as the core protective coating of printed circuit boards, defending circuits against corrosion, oxidation and environmental erosion. The overall performance and service life of PCB are directly determined by solder mask quality. Without reliable solder mask protection, circuit insulation will degrade rapidly, and electronic devices will face shortened service life. Most critically, the solder mask forms an insulating barrier between independent pads and conductive traces during SMT assembly, effectively preventing solder bridging and short-circuit defects.

Core Functions of Solder Mask

  1. Short-Circuit Prevention
Pad spacing on high-density PCBs is extremely compact. The insulating solder mask isolates adjacent pads to avoid short circuits during soldering and reflow processing.
  2. Controlled Soldering Area
It restricts solder deposition only on designated pads, preventing unnecessary solder adhesion on bare copper traces.
  3. Environmental Durability
Resists aging, dust, moisture and chemical corrosion, providing long-term stable protection for fine circuit traces.
  4. High-Density Circuit Enablement
Excellent insulation performance supports ultra-fine line design and high-density circuit layout, meeting miniaturization electronic product requirements.

Solder Mask Manufacturing Process

Most mainstream PCB manufacturers adopt LPI (Liquid Photoimageable) solder mask ink, the standard process for industrial mass production. This specialized photosensitive ink can be coated by spraying, screen printing or roller coating across the PCB surface. After surface cleaning and micro-treatment, the coated ink is fully cured via UV exposure to form a uniform, high-adhesion protective film.
Polymer composite coating materials are also available for ultra-thin solder mask coverage, suitable for special board types. One limitation of conventional LPISM material is incompatibility with certain advanced electroplating and surface finishing processes.

PCB Solder Mask Color Classification & Features

Green Solder Mask

As the industry standard option, green solder mask remains the most widely used solution. It delivers high contrast with white silkscreen, low light reflection and anti-glare performance. Minor process defects are easy to identify during inspection, which facilitates quality control. Stable comprehensive performance, cost-effective and high-temperature resistant, green solder mask is eco-friendly and releases no toxic gas under high-temperature working conditions.

White Solder Mask

Widely applied in high-end aesthetic electronic products for a clean and delicate appearance. However, white ink easily covers tiny trace defects, bringing higher difficulty to quality inspection. It also has a natural yellowing risk under long-term heat and aging, limiting its application in high-temperature scenarios.

Black Solder Mask

Features low light reflection and a high-grade visual effect. Markings and large component symbols remain recognizable, but low contrast reduces the visibility of fine silkscreen and tiny traces. Black ink contains carbon-based components with certain thermal absorption, leading to heat accumulation risk. In addition, carbon filler brings weak conductivity, which may induce micro-short circuit risks for high-density circuits. Cleaning and rework are also more difficult for black PCBs.

Red Solder Mask

An increasingly popular customized color with unique visual recognition. It offers decent silkscreen contrast and breaks the monotonous traditional green design. Red ink shows stable exposure performance in mass production and strong defect coverage capability.

Blue Solder Mask

Provides sharp contrast with white text and clear marking display, commonly used for industrial control, instrumentation and LCD supporting boards. Blue solder mask easily highlights dust and surface stains, requiring stricter workshop cleanliness. Its internal cobalt-based pigment also carries slight conductive hidden risks.

Yellow Solder Mask

A niche customized color with soft appearance. Its major drawback is poor contrast with silkscreen and circuit traces, resulting in low practicability and limited industrial application. Sample verification is strongly recommended before mass production for special color customization.

Process & Electrical Differences of Various Solder Masks

Solder mask color does not affect basic circuit conduction, while solder mask thickness and ink viscosity significantly impact impedance control, production yield and long-term reliability. Based on Maxipcb’s rich manufacturing experience:
  1. Thickness & Bubble Control
Red solder mask features stable ink fluidity, uniform thickness control and low bubble defect rate. It can cover minor copper surface and trace defects that are obvious on green boards. Red and yellow ink maintain stable exposure parameters during mass production; green solder mask has unstable exposure tolerance, and white ink is difficult for thickness and uniformity management.
  2. Ink Viscosity
Viscosity varies greatly by color: green ink has low viscosity, suitable for fine-pitch high-density PCB screen printing; red, yellow and white ink have medium viscosity; black solder mask has the highest viscosity. Replacing green with high-viscosity colored ink may cause printing difficulties and quality risks for ultra-fine spacing boards.
  3. Conductivity Risk
Blue solder mask contains cobalt additives and black ink contains carbon components. These conductive fillers may cause micro-leakage or short-circuit risks for high-impedance and high-density circuits.
  4. Environmental & Thermal Performance
Green halogen-free solder mask is the most mature eco-friendly formula, with excellent high-temperature resistance and no harmful gas emission during reflow or long-term high-temperature operation.
Maxipcb supports full-color customized solder mask production, including green, white, black, red, blue, yellow and special matte/bright color options, with precise impedance matching and strict process control to meet industrial, automotive, medical and high-end consumer electronics customization needs.
