  • Data Sheet

CTI, short for Comparative Tracking Index, is a core indicator to measure the surface leakage tracking resistance of insulating materials.

CTI Definition & Test Standard

Per the IEC 112 standard, CTI refers to the maximum voltage (unit: V) that an insulating material surface can withstand without generating conductive tracking marks, after dropping 50 drops of 0.1% ammonium chloride electrolyte solution.
Based on IEC 950 specifications, substrate materials are classified into three CTI rating levels according to voltage resistance performance:
  • Grade I: CTI ≥ 600 V
  • Grade II: 400 V ≤ CTI < 600 V
  • Grade III: 175 V ≤ CTI < 400 V
Professional Note: The higher the CTI value, the stronger the material’s resistance to electric leakage and tracking, and the better the insulation reliability under humid and polluted conditions.

PCB CTI Grade

Electrical Tracking Mechanism

Electric tracking refers to the gradual formation of conductive paths on the surface of insulating substrates. This degradation is triggered by long-term electric field radiation and surface charge accumulation. Environmental contaminants, moisture and dust will significantly accelerate insulation aging and tracking failure. The CTI test simulates such harsh working conditions to evaluate material safety margins.

CTI Application in PCB Industry

As the key carrier for electronic components and signal transmission, PCB reliability directly determines the service life of terminal equipment. Driven by high-density circuit design, lead-free processing and halogen-free material upgrading, modern PCBs face increasing risks of quality defects, such as poor solder wetting, board bursting, delamination and CAF failure. Reasonable CTI material selection effectively improves PCB environmental adaptability and long-term stability.

Industry Practical Status

  1. CTI parameters are recorded in official UL certification files. For conventional standard PCB mass production, CTI testing is not mandatory for most manufacturers.
  2. If customers require CTI data for compliance documents or project approval, relevant material reports can be provided by raw laminate suppliers. Most document-based CTI requirements are negotiable in actual business.
  3. CTI is not a routine inspection item in the PCB industry. Even mainstream manufacturers no longer retain mandatory CTI testing in UL qualification items.
  4. The conventional CTI value of common FR-4 PCB laminates is 175V, which meets the basic application demands of consumer electronics and general industrial products.
