  • Description

  • Data Sheet

Most of customers will simply answer FR4 when asked about PCB material, yet many do not fully understand what FR4 actually means. This article systematically popularizes PCB base material classification based on common industrial applications.
The "board" mentioned in daily use refers to the substrate material. It is compositely made of copper foil and prepreg (P-sheet). Both copper foil and prepreg can be classified and selected according to different application requirements.

What is FR4

FR4 adopts epoxy resin or modified epoxy resin as the adhesive, and glass fiber cloth as the reinforcing material.
In short, all substrates belonging to this resin system can be collectively called FR4. FR4 is a general term for a flame-retardant epoxy resin system, not a single fixed material model.
At present, FR4-based PCB is the most widely used and highest-volume circuit board material worldwide. This explains why most users only know the name FR4 but lack understanding of its internal classification.

HIGH SPEED PCB material

Classification of High‑Speed & Common PCB Materials

Traditional FR4 and high-speed PCB substrates are classified by multiple dimensions:

1. Classification by Fiberglass Weave Type

All fiberglass cloth models are defined by IPC specifications, ensuring consistent performance from different manufacturers.
Common models:
106, 1067, 1080, 1078, 2116, 2113, 3313, 7628

2. Classification by Glass Fiber Type

  • E‑Glass
Also known as alkali-free electrical insulation glass. It is calcium aluminosilicate glass with alkali metal oxide content below 1%. It features high insulation resistance and is the universal standard glass fiber for conventional PCB. E-glass is used by default for most products without special high-frequency requirements.
  • NE‑Glass (Low DK Glass)
A low dielectric fiber developed by Nippon Textile.
    DK: 4.6 (E-glass = 6.6)
    Tan δ @ 1MHz: 0.0007 (E-glass = 0.0012)
Typical material models using NE glass: M7NE, IT968SE, IT988GSE.

3. Classification by Resin System & Brand Series

Major mainstream substrate brands and core models:
  • ITEQ (Lianmao): IT180A, IT170GRA1, IT958G, IT968, IT968SE, IT988GSE
  • TUC: TU862HF, TU872LK, TU872SLK, TU872SLK‑SP, TU883, TU933+
  • Panasonic: Megtron4, M4S, Megtron6, M6G, M7E, M7NE
  • Park Meteorwave: MW1000, MW2000, MW3000, MW4000, MW8000
  • Shengyi: S1000‑2(M), S7439, S6
  • Rogers: RO4003, RO3003, RO4350B (high-frequency RF dedicated)

4. Classification by Dielectric Loss (DF Value)

General industry classification based on dissipation factor:
  • Ordinary loss: DF ≥ 0.02
  • Medium loss: 0.01 < DF < 0.02
  • Low loss: 0.005 < DF < 0.01
  • Ultra-low loss: DF < 0.005
Note: The interval is a general industry standard and may vary slightly among different manufacturers.

5. Classification by Flame Retardancy (UL94 Standard)

  • Flame retardant grade: UL94‑V0, UL94‑V1
  • Non-flame retardant grade: UL94‑HB

Summary

Different fiberglass types, resin formulas, dielectric loss parameters and flame-retardant grades form a complete material system from ordinary FR4 to high-speed low-loss PCB. Maxipcb matches customized substrate solutions according to customer needs including high-speed signal, high temperature resistance, impedance control, and flame-retardant specifications.
