1. FR4 Dielectric Constant

FR4 is the most common PCB dielectric, with a relative dielectric constant of 4.2-4.7 (vs air). It varies with temperature (max 20% variation at 0-70℃), causing a 10% line delay change (higher temperature = greater delay). Dielectric constant decreases with frequency; below 100MHz, use 4.5 for capacitance and delay calculation.

2. Signal Transmission Speed (FR4 PCB)

Inner layer: 180ps/inch (1inch = 1000mil = 2.54cm); Surface layer: 140-170ps/inch (varies by condition).

3. Capacitor Characteristics & Filtering

Capacitors can be equivalent to L-R-C series, with a resonance point (inductive beyond this point), determined mainly by ESL (equivalent series inductance), varying with capacitance, process and manufacturer.
Examples: 100nF chip capacitor (ESL≈0.5nH, ESR=0.1Ω) has optimal filtering at ~24MHz; 1nF chip capacitor (ESL≈0.5nH, ESR=0.01Ω) at ~200MHz.

Combining different capacitors for better filtering may cause an unwanted resonance point (24-200MHz) with higher impedance. Mitigate this by using larger ESR capacitors (reduces Q value, flattens frequency characteristics) or adding a few-ohm series resistor to small capacitors (e.g., 680pF) in parallel combinations.

Note: Example parameters are inferred (no manufacturer-specific ESL/ESR), with minimal deviation. Past resonant frequencies for 1nF/100nF ceramic capacitors were 100MHz/10MHz; chip capacitor ESL is smaller (no reliable data yet).
