  • Data Sheet

For general PCBs, green solder mask oil and blue solder mask oil are the most commonly used, with green oil as the default option. Solder mask oils of other colors, such as red oil and matte black oil, are more costly than green oil. Maxipcb supports customized solder mask oil colors, and the specific choice of solder mask depends on your actual application needs.

Why Green Solder Mask Is the Default Choice?

Reason 1: Facilitates Industrial Production & Inspection

Generally, all electronic PCB products go through board fabrication and SMT assembly processes. During board fabrication, several procedures need to be carried out in a yellow light room, where green solder mask has a better visual effect (though this is not the primary reason). In SMT soldering, processes such as solder paste application and final AOI (Automatic Optical Inspection) require optical positioning and calibration. The green background color enables better recognition accuracy of testing instruments, ensuring stable and efficient production.

Reason 2: Reduces Eye Fatigue for Manual Inspection

Common PCB solder mask colors include red, yellow, green, blue, and black. Although most line inspections now rely on flying probe testing, some manual visual checks are still required by workers. Staring at PCBs under strong light for a long time is extremely tiring, and green solder mask is relatively the least harmful to the eyes, which is another key reason for its widespread use.

Reason 3: Higher Safety & Environmental Friendliness

Blue solder mask oil contains cobalt, while black solder mask oil contains carbon—both of which have a certain degree of conductivity, posing a potential short-circuit risk. In contrast, green solder mask is more environmentally friendly and does not release toxic gases under high-temperature operating conditions, ensuring safer use in various electronic products.

Misunderstanding About Black PCB Solder Mask

Since around 2007, people have begun to pay attention to PCB colors, mainly because top brands such as ASUS and MSI adopted black PCB designs for their high-end motherboards. This gradually led to a misunderstanding that "black PCBs must be high-end." Subsequently, more and more manufacturers began using black solder mask coatings—a phenomenon driven by this misconception.

In fact, no one has ever proven that a black PCB means better motherboard quality; this is entirely a result of misleading product positioning by first-tier brands. It is true that using black PCB can reflect a manufacturer’s technical strength: black solder mask makes wiring difficult to see, which brings unprecedented cost pressure to both design and after-sales services. However, even manufacturers with strong technical capabilities do not use black PCB to improve motherboard performance. From a rational perspective, it is clear that PCB color alone cannot enhance board performance.
