With the continuous advancement of modern technology, electronic devices have become essential components in daily life, and printed circuit boards serve as the core foundational carrier for all electronic equipment. As end products evolve toward multi-function and high integration, higher technical standards and structural design requirements have been raised for PCBs. To accommodate the assembly of special components, sunken structural layout and high-power heat dissipation design, step slot structures are widely adopted in PCB fabrication. As a key structural design solution, step slot PCBs have been extensively applied across the electronics manufacturing industry.
Currently, two mainstream processing technologies are commonly used for PCB step slot fabrication.
The first solution is controlled-depth routing. This processing method faces prominent technical limitations in mass production. It is difficult to achieve precise depth control, and the routing layer cannot be accurately positioned to the designated inner circuit layer, resulting in non-compliant structural dimensions and failure to meet design specifications. Additionally, circuit patterning cannot be realized on the bottom surface of the milled slot, which restricts its application scope.
The second processing approach adopts gasket embedding and filling technology. This method is prone to lamination void defects. During the high-pressure lamination process, residual air inside the step slot is compressed by pressing plates, generating uneven extrusion stress. This leads to gasket displacement and misalignment, creating gaps between core substrates and prepreg at the slot edge. Permanent cavities will remain after gasket removal. Such internal voids seriously degrade PCB long-term reliability, expose metallic circuits at hole areas, and cause delamination or cracking under mechanical and environmental stress.
