The core goal of SMT (Surface Mount Technology) assembly is to accurately place electronic components on the designated positions of PCBs. However, component misalignment often occurs during actual SMT processing, affecting assembly quality. What are the specific causes of component misalignment? Let’s explore them in detail.

Causes of Component Misalignment in SMT Assembly

  1. Expired solder paste: Solder paste has a limited shelf life. Beyond this period, the flux in the paste deteriorates, leading to poor soldering and potential component shifting.

  2. Insufficient solder paste viscosity: If the solder paste lacks adequate adhesion, components may shift due to vibration or shaking during handling after placement.

  3. Improper nozzle air pressure: During pick-and-place, incorrect air pressure adjustment for the nozzle (insufficient pressure) can result in unstable component placement and subsequent misalignment.

  4. Excessive flux content in solder paste: During reflow soldering, excessive flux flow can cause components to "float" or slide on the PCB surface.

  5. Rough handling after placement: Vibration or incorrect transportation methods for PCBs with placed components can lead to component displacement before reflow soldering.
As we can see, most causes of component misalignment stem from minor details in the production process. With careful inspection and standardized operation during manufacturing, many such defects can be effectively avoided.
